blagojevich

this blagojevich scandal is a mess now....i always question these scandals where all the blame games are functional on just one actor i.e. the person under the microscope of media. In this scandal that is governor blagojevich....I wonder was he the only person playing bad....i am afraid by just blaming him for everything we might be trying to clap with only one hand which is not only impossible but also so unfair.

If blagojevich took bribe-offers...the other side of this crime scene would show us exactly who offered him bribe.

If blagojevich was asking for a price tag on a senate seat...who was willing to bid higher...

if he was talking crap on phone...who was on the otherside of the phone...

i believe for a fair trial's sake we must see other names tagged to this corruption scandal than just mr. blagojevich.

route choice and genetic algortihm based simulations for control optimization

route choice is a system derived component where it could depend on many variables starting from a synchronic option available to users through advanced ITS devices or through external factros.

For example, a set of competing objectives will always encounter when we try to design and implement a framework using a complex system based on any heuristic approach. Be it a game theory problem, a problem initiated by operations management theory, or a simple logit math where we use utilities to compute the probablities, the competing objectives will always add complexities to the script in hand.

Another good example of competing objective problem is global air traffic system where the operations manager would optimize the system based on what is best for all the operators in the air traffic system. On the other hand, the traveler may choose his route regardless of what is best for the whole traffic system. Instead the traveler may opt for the route that is most congested, but shortest for him. It appears that there is a parallel existence of user equilibrium and susytem optimum here.

The question then would be if the equilibrium state would exist in a given traffic system; this question may open a bundle of many unanswered questions that are only theoretically investogated in the past by researchers. Some key questions that come to my mind at least include

1. Does the equilibrium state exist in global network of air traffic system?
2. Is there existence of User Equilibrium, and System Optimum? Do they co-exist?
3. Can a real life air traffic system be simulated to get these equilibrium conditions, and how do we regress the benefits of this equilibrium?
4. How the equilibrium system can take of the burden of high air traffic off of some of the nation's busiest airports...or may be in some cases world's busiest airports?
5. How does it help in terms of golbal environment, and energy savings?
6. Are we expecing a change in technology in near future?

In any case real life simulation of these airtraffic conditions are necessary to understand the benefits of UE and SO flows which are being tested on theoretical levels right now by the researchers.

It could be agood research extension of my doctoral research work.

activity based route choice solutions

i wonder how activity based aggregate models could be useful?...Activity based models are data intensive; we dont have that kind of data available...similarly, even if some region in the united states used activity based models, my question to them would be how much of a difference it made to their projections as compared to when they used regular gravity model or any other combination of route choice model. If thedifference is not much, then how do they justify activity based models?

My personal thought on this issue is that Activity based models are only good in combined traffic assignment and control framework (CTAC), and that too only if we use dynamic assignment process. Otherwise, activity based models will get stale soon and the researchers will have to come up with some new idea to do projections.

complex aggregate route choice models and the calibration issues

I was involved in a technical review of adjusted projections for a region. To my surprise, some of the technical users were expecting higher numbers for some of the assigned functional classes. One of the common suggestions tend to dis like differential projections stating the projections from the calibrated models should be higher. Well, there are many questions that come to mind when we look at this assumption. Some of them include:

1) What is the average annual growth rate of demographics especially related to the model inputs for the region where lower forecasts are observed?

2) How about some of the newer infrastructure development projects added to the existing landuse; some of those projects if large enough may change the framework of the trip generation process.

3) How about the synchronic inertia that exists between the mutual interaction of these new projects, diverse route choice, and socio-economic characteristics.

In any case, throwing the blames on mathematical models always sound easy; in reality the picture may show something different.

It is therefore important to have validated input data; especially the demographics should be validated thorougly. The complex models though calibrated and validated, are heavily dependent on input data.....

I hope we will be able to explain this to the people in professional practice one day where they will not expect model to be the "solution generator", in stead they would take it as one of the many available tools used in the infrastructure planning process.

an interesting quote

a movie character said in a movie that i saw yesterday "Life is a very sensitive transaction, you can lose all your lifetime earnings in a split of a second; you need to be careful enough and cash out at the right moment"

I think it is interesting not only from the monetary perspectives, but from the "dignity and respect aspect" of life too.

Data Projections

Cube 5.0 like anyother upgraded software patch comes with promising scope of software application. Especially PT module that will enhance complex transit modeling and will be quite helpfull in new-starts submittal process to FTA.

Although enhanced tools make Cube5 powerful, the flaws that come with the Cube5 package overweigh the benefits. For example, some of the enhanced features of PT module are only available in Cube 5.0 and older versions will not be able to benefit from those. Similarly The GIS-GUI environment of Cube 5 sux...it is incomplete, and I believe the projection issues will make it highly unattrative in planning markets. It provides only limited tools to the user to the extent that you have to toggle between the dot net environment and GIS environment.

Similarly polygon-environ feature is not available which is used for any update to the regional nets on global scale. I wonder how Cube 5 GIS environment will be useful.

Personally, I feel the mathematical modeling should be left to Cube/Voyager 4.3 beta now until we get a stable version of Cube 5. It may take more than two years from now to get a stable version of Cube5 like all other previous version.

I think in this regional planning effort we all have something to learn. There are so many other complex tools/variables in mathematical models that are in the plate and need further enhancements, migrating to Cube 5 GIS environment would be the last thing I could think of.

Our Social Behaviors - some observations

1) We may ask for help when drowning and be saved but we always forget to be thankfu to that same person. Infact at times we may participate in cutting the hand he/she used to save us...What a shameful act...what a lowly way of thinking?

2) We may use a person until we need him/her; once objectives accomplished we have a dont care attitude.

3) We make friends for our insecurities, we oblige them for the purposes; friendships based on "friendships" are rare.

4) We expect more than we deliver; and if needed we blackmail the person being exploited through relationships, emotions, and whatever works.

5) We pray to God, but we dont care how we treat people. So we can be truely unjust to somebody and do something shearly wrong to a person, and the next moment we are praying to God...I dont understand how it reflects the ethics and religion, and what kind of connection to God is it?...is it "using" God as well?

6) We are not willing to learn from anybody no matter what the outcome is.

I pity on all the losers that I have stated above, and I am sure they will see what life brings to them for what they do to people and how they use people through their emotional stunts; they can use those stunts once, but not always......

they are all assholes......and investing any relation in them is a perfect rip off to yourself...

blood sucking bastards................

The Biggest Loser

Who could be the biggest loser in life?

I wonder if the riches make u lose something especially if they are gone when u need them in life....I dont think so!

A biggest loser will be the person who lives for someone rather a person who loves someone truly/madly and that someone leaves him/her alone in the middle of no where...just because his/her mood swings to something more interesting...that is so sad.....or that someone wakes up one morning and realizes he/she has better choices to make...or trivial things come to his/her mind that lead him/her to a new fantasy world where he/she could have better choices.

Our bodies and their relationships are sacred. They are like a little child who could be sensitive to a little more heat or a little less cold....any imbalance could harm that child if not taken seriously. Similarly, the affectionswhen entangled into trivials, gear the relationship to a travis that would lead all the choices to a disaster...

It is so pathetic that a single person misunderstanding the situation could push other person's life to a hell...where he/she would be alone for the rest of his life..not knowing what he/she is alive for?

Heart-broken, withered, "thrown away", "used", "rotten", and "marooned"...those are the words that come to my mind for such a loser......

Life is full of this shit everywhere, where people could prove you wrong, they could prove you a liar, they could prove you what not...and you will not have anything in your hand that tells your side of the story despite you ended up sacrificing everything that you had...

it is so sad.

Eating Halal Food - A Global issue which is out of equation now

This thing has been bothering me for many days now...and I feel I need to throw it up...of course what could be the best place to do so...

I think I am nervous on this "Halal" talks going on in every muslim house that Eat this and dont eat that....eat this brand of food, and dont eat that brand of food. I am sick of scams and emails.

You go to the mosque and you find a brochure by some "dear muslim brother/sister" explaining how the mcdonalds fries have layer of bacon on them....how do u find that brochure is authentic...and then someone starts the argument....o brother u should call mcdonalds and enquire about it.....how many of those vendors u could actually call.....? It is simply impossible.....

One argument would be...dont eat foods from these vendors...then u go to the target store and start picking up things that you like...for example butter, cereal, potato chips, salsa, juices, dish detergents, "bread especially", and the list goes on.......in short every single thing that u want to bring home as a commodity....has issues according to many "What is Halal Books"....yogurt...take an example of yogurt...milk....baby milk powders...according to these books....only a few products on the shelves of any grocery store are halal...and the rest are Haraam......

Now if somebody thinks this problem exists only in countries where the majority of the people are non-muslims...well that is not the case..

In my recent visit to Pakistan, and Dubai...I saw many of those products which are labeled as "haram" in many of the Muslim resources here in america...for example many nacho products, and chips products, juices...and what not...all of them were there...and labelled as imported fine quality products...

What can be done to fix this shit.,...do we even have an option...i dont know how u can abstain, and save yourself...it is puzzling...
Here is something very interesting I read today...."A vision without an action is day dreaming and an action without a vision is a nightmare"

"not mature and ignorant"

At times we behave very emotionally undevelopped rather juvenile who is not ready to understand that he/she could be wrong. The intensity of immaturity is such that any possibility of making a mistake is not even close....and one assumes "O I am so perfect".

So this person is damn arrogant and this arrogance does not go away untill he/she experiences humility or some kind of meeknes or situational lowliness through real-life experiences. It is a very interesting human behavior, where people when defensive they stop learning and start hurting themselves.

Some thoughtful person once said...The process of learning starts with the phrase "I don't know" and it stops at "I know"....so when a person during the criticism keeps saying "I know"...the argument should be dropped right there...assuming the listener is not ready to learn...

With this bulge of fake assumptions in a small brain, we tend to brake every wall of criticism that faces us assuming we are so good, yet not realizing that the criticism may be useful for the future encounter of this situation and may be there is something to learn there.

Another part of over confidence that relates an over confident person to ignorence is "forgetting" what to talk. An overconfident person is like an intoxicated dimwit who doesnt know what he is talking about....and he/she would just try to prove the point regardless......this is quite ignorant....people who have this problem go through embarassment manytimes in life before they actually learn something, which is miserable. I have seen a couple of them personally too....

What can I say more...blindfolded...assuming the storm is not coming....assuming they have not made any mistake...and even if they know they made a mistake, they wont listen to themselves....assuming everything is hunky dory in life....not showing the relaity to the world...just living a fake life......all of this come with this overconfidence..... and ignorance.

usually these kind of people dont know how to communicate impressively.

Too many cooks

Last night I was watching a program on Muharram on Geo TV. A clerik was addressing to people, and people were praising him for saying things that they like.

The challenge is that few hours later another clerik was addressing to same kind of gathering...and posing the same event in a slightly different fashion...while a few days ago I saw some other clerik doing the same thing.

I sometime feel that Islam has been hijacked..........and I feel nervous and confused when I see all these people who have so much to say, and each individual has his own set of details.

Some of the details you hear from them is in the fictional form where they tell a story, and in some cases a person "wonder" how do you know that in the stroy "certain" character made that posture...how do u know the exact details of event happening centuries ago so precisely that you can actually tell the postures of a character in that narration. I doubt if it is possible in today's world when we have all these media and info revolutions....these kind of details are always lost.

Also...now there are so many cleriks that it is very difficult to get one point of view, and everyone interprets things differently; which one is right? How do I know?

Similarly you go to one mosque; they have a different opinion; you go to another, they look at things from a different lens and it goes on......

Some of the mosques backhome announce the hatered against the other sects; and everyone seems to claim that "they" are the righteous.....I dont want to expand this narration by involving christianity here as well...although i believe they have the same issues...for example if we compare Orthodox church, catholic church, and Latter Day Saint (Mormon) Church....in individuality they claim they have the truth...but each one claims the other two are wrong.....

What do you do in this situation?

It is a mess.....and at least among the scholars no one seems to be solving this issue......no one seems to understand how a "layman" /"common person" who doesn carry a bulk load of religious info may get confused.....like I am!

IF you ask me....I have no clue what is going on...and I am lost.......

blindfolded and dangerous

Another truth about life is the "false-assumptions" of young generation in Pakistan on how good "parents" we are or will be, and how our parents dont understand us.

When it comes to our friends, friends of the friends, our relatives, our spouse and his/her relatives and many other people who really dont know the "real-inside" of us; "we" pose nice, and get all the praises possible for perfectly nice behavior.

When it comes to our parents or spouses' parents who took care of their kids while they were not even able to move a fly from the nose; we consider them the worst thing happen to us....in some cases we are not happy to introduce them to others as our parents....how pathetic and rediculous this behavior is?

Those who do that shall see that coming in their old age soon, and it will be too late to undo.

The Chess Board of Life

Kya Bashar Kee Bisaat -- Aaj hae kal nahee

At times it is frustrating to see people behaving selfish despite knowing they are here for short period of time. I dont know what to do with that. I guess I am too simple to be political or mean.

You help some body, and that somebody starts using you--a point comes where you feel threatened. Yet the same person who you helped once, turns against you once he/she is in power forgetting everything. Not that I would help somebody with the expectation of returns in mind. But it is so difficult to digest.

People have different perceptions about life. For example some people are always curious about "What I am wearing", Why I have been wearing some shirt time and again", "Why my shoes are worn off", and "Why have I not changed my car yet", or "making a display of how rich they are", or " how successful they are in career, and yet others are not"....when they themselvesdoes not know how to treat people with respect regardless of what they are wearing, and regardless of what their financial status is?

I feel miserable in the company of such people...no matter how hard you try....these kind of folks simply wont change....no matter what?

When it comes to life...i think it is delicate. My personal experience is that choices you make in life impact your life. People take it forgranted---and at the time of making choices do not realize what will they bring to them. I think for young generation it is something to ponder. A right choice made at a right time saves you from many problems in future. Choices could be troublesome in anything. For example, " A choice of leaving your home, and traveling oceans length away to seek better future"......well..it sounds very interesting...but it may bring many unnecessary things to your life....if you move to a place which is a melting pot...where you yourslef has melted a bit...what happens with your generations...if they keep inheriting this gradual melting...what happens after two three generations...would they even have the "faith" you follow...and the question is how important is it for you that they keep same faith? Another question is what is the guarantee they will follow your faith anywhere else?

All of these things are quite complicated...and I am still struggling to understand them? I think people are very politically motivated...and I am too neive for any politics..
